KULMINATOR
COMETH!
Germany
has a long and proud brewing heritage producing pilsner style ales of
outstanding quality. Stronger lagers
qualify as Bocks, and those even stronger are known as Dopplebocks, so EKU
28 Kulminator, recently added to our list
falls very much into the latter class.
EKU 28 has often vied with Samichlaus Bier to claim the prize as the world’s
strongest continually brewed lager, with some examples of EKU achieving 13% alc/vol,
whilst Samichlaus is currently 14%. The current offering is 11%
There are interesting parallels here with the Eiswien’s produced in
Germany
where the botrytis grapes are allowed to freeze on the vines during the harvest
which concentrates the alcoholic strength. In the beer world it is referred to
as Eisbock which is said to have occurred by accident when a batch of strong
lager was left to ripen at too low a temperature which again concentrated the
strength.
EKU 28 is lagered for 9 months prior to release and has subtle overtones of
citrus and orange peel and is clean and not at all cloying.
The ‘28’ refers to the German system of measuring alcohol, Plato, and
not the overall strength as some mistake it for!
SAM’S CIDER
REVIVAL.
We have
recently added a new range of ciders to our list from the Winkleigh Cider
Company which comes with a distinguished pedigree.
The current owner
of the business was the cider maker of Inches Cider which was a highly regarded
producer, which eventually fell under the watchful eye of Bulmer’s who took
the business over, only then to close it down.
Bulmer’s real
interest lay in the White Lightning brand which at the time was going from
strength to strength. Ironically, the white cider market today has declined in
favour of the other Bulmer owned brand Magners of Clonmel, which has grown
considerably in the last year or so.
In homage to the
Inches founder Winkleigh’s brands go by the name of Sam’s and we have two
new lines added, Sam’s Poundhouse
Medium sparkling at 6% and Sam’s Autumn
Devon Scrumpy at 7.4% alc/vol
